LGBT history volunteer David Hensley puts heart into ONE Archives

City looks to expand protection for gay, transgender residents

The city of Charlotte is considering expanding its ordinances to prohibit discrimination in places of public accommodation against people based on their sexual orientation, gender expression and gender identity. The proposed changes would give lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents some recourse when they feel discriminated against, but it would not give them protection in employment issues.

US Marine charged in Filipino transgender slaying

ACLU challenges Va. high schoola s transgender bathroom policy

Gavin, a 15-year-old sophomore at Gloucester High School in Virginia's Tidewater region, was barred from using the boys' restrooms at school when the local school board voted to limit boys' and girls' restrooms and locker rooms "to the corresponding biological genders," a policy that requires transgendered students to use "alternative private facilities." Public commenters at the board meeting hurled insults at those like Gavin, saying that transgender students should not be allowed to use the bathroom that boys do because it would infringe on their privacy.

ACLU Files Complaint After School Bars Transgender Boy From Using Men's Bathroom

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a complaint with the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education Thursday after a Virginia school district adopted a policy barring a transgender boy from using the men's bathroom. Earlier in December, the Gloucester County School Board approved a motion stating that the district will "provide male and female restroom and locker room facilities in its schools, and the use of said facilities shall be limited to the corresponding biological genders, and students with gender identity issues shall be provided an alternative private facility."
